Human receptionist or AI receptionist: which to choose in Quebec?
In Quebec, a full-time receptionist costs about $2,900 to $4,700 a month before employer costs according to Job Bank, a human call centre answers on quote, and an AI receptionist such as ATOM Assistant costs $179 to $499 a month. This comparison, published by ATOM Solutions inc., sets these options side by side, with sources dated October 14, 2026.
Published
In brief
- A full-time receptionist costs about $2,900 to $4,700 a month before employer costs (Job Bank); ATOM Assistant, $179 to $499 a month
- A person answers one call at a time, during working hours; the AI agent answers around the clock and takes up to 5 calls at once depending on the plan
- Quebec’s bilingual human services (Soluvox, Communication LGP) answer day and night but publish no price
- The two models combine: the AI answers first and transfers to a person on your team when the call requires it
How was this comparison made?
On October 14, 2026, we read the public pages of Soluvox, Communication LGP and Smith.ai (home, services, plans, privacy policy) and noted what they state. The cost of an employee comes from the Government of Canada’s Job Bank: it is a published hourly wage, which we convert to a monthly cost at 40 hours a week. That calculation is ours, not an amount published by the source, and it leaves out employer costs. Each table cell links to the page consulted and its date; what is not published is written “not published”. Prices change: check the provider’s page before deciding.
What is the difference between a human receptionist and an AI receptionist?
A human receptionist answers one call at a time, during the hours she works, and judges on the spot what to say to an angry or worried caller. An AI receptionist such as ATOM Assistant answers every call according to the rules you configure, at any hour, and takes up to 5 calls at once depending on the plan. In between, call centres such as Soluvox and Communication LGP staff people day and night, which a single employee cannot do.

How much does each option cost per month?
In Quebec, Job Bank publishes an hourly wage of $16.60 to $27.00 for a receptionist, with a median of $20.00. At 40 hours a week, that comes to about $2,900 to $4,700 a month, before employer costs, vacation and replacements. Quebec’s bilingual human services publish no amount. Smith.ai shows its prices in US dollars. ATOM Assistant shows $179 to $499 a month, with a 14-day trial.
| Option | Public monthly cost | Trial or guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| ATOM Assistant | $179 to $499 a month, 600 to 2,000 minutes included depending on the plan, extra minute $0.25. Pricing | 14 days free, card required, no charge before day 14. Pricing |

Who books the appointments, and what happens to Law 25?
The three human services and ATOM Assistant all book appointments. The table shows with which tool, and what each one publishes about where personal information is processed.
| Option | Appointment booking | Law 25 and hosting |
|---|---|---|
| ATOM Assistant | Live booking against your open slots, the slot held during confirmation, confirmation text message | AI reasoning on Google Cloud in Montreal; voice, audio and transcripts outside Canada, disclosed in the app. Law 25 guide |
| Soluvox | Agents manage appointments in the client’s scheduling software, in real time. soluvox.com/services/prise-de-rendez-vous, Oct. 14, 2026 | States that it processes information in compliance with Law 25; agents in Quebec; hosting location not published. soluvox.com, Oct. 14, 2026 |
| Communication LGP | Appointment and order taking, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. communicationlgp.com/services, Oct. 14, 2026 | Not published: the Sept. 12, 2023 policy refers to the Quebec private sector act without naming Law 25. communicationlgp.com/politique-de-confidentialite, Oct. 14, 2026 No service subcontracted outside Canada, according to the home page. communicationlgp.com, Oct. 14, 2026 |
| Smith.ai (human receptionists) | Booking on your calendar at US$1.50 a call, with Calendly, Acuity and others. smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, Oct. 14, 2026 | Not published: the privacy policy cites California and the European Economic Area, not Quebec, and only says the website is hosted by Amazon Cloud Services. smith.ai/privacy, Oct. 14, 2026 |
Law 25 does not depend on the model chosen: whether the voice is human or artificial, a caller’s information is personal information. In both cases, section 17 of the act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector requires an assessment before information is disclosed outside Quebec. See the Law 25 guide and the definition of a privacy impact assessment.
When is a person better than an AI?
A person is safer when the call calls for judgment, empathy or an exception to your rules. These situations are hard to program:
- A customer who is angry, distressed or grieving and needs to be heard before being informed
- A price negotiation or a complex sale, where every answer commits your business
- Work beyond the phone, such as counter reception, mail or filing
- An unusual request that your rules did not foresee
When is an AI receptionist enough?
- Calls outside opening hours, evenings and weekends
- Peaks when several calls arrive at once, up to 5 depending on the plan
- Repetitive questions: hours, address, rates, availability
- Appointment booking against open slots, with a confirmation text message
- A budget that does not allow one more position: see the pricing
Can you combine a person and an AI?
Yes, and it is often the best starting point. With conditional call forwarding, unanswered calls go to the AI agent without changing your number; the agent takes a message, books an appointment or transfers to a person on your team according to your rules. The guide on keeping your number explains the steps with Bell, Vidéotron, Telus and Rogers. Smith.ai sells both models: its AI reception can transfer the call to a human agent in its network. smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist, Oct. 14, 2026 To compare Quebec’s AI voice agents with one another, see the main comparison.

Frequently asked questions
Does an AI receptionist replace a human receptionist?
Not for everything. It replaces the work of answering, informing and booking, at any hour, but not a person’s judgment on a delicate call, nor the tasks that do not go through the phone. A business can keep a person for reception and give the AI the unanswered calls.
How much does a receptionist cost in Quebec compared with an AI receptionist?
According to Job Bank, a receptionist earns $16.60 to $27.00 an hour in Quebec, or about $2,900 to $4,700 a month at 40 hours a week, before employer costs. ATOM Assistant plans range from $179 to $499 a month. The two do not provide the same service: the agent answers around the clock, the person also handles reception.
Are there bilingual human receptionist services in Quebec?
Yes. Soluvox publishes bilingual receptionists located in Quebec, on duty 24 hours a day, and Communication LGP a Quebec City call centre that is “100% Quebec and bilingual”, also in service 24/7. Neither publishes an amount: you have to ask for a price.
Does an AI receptionist answer at night?
Yes: ATOM Assistant answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and several calls at once depending on the plan. The human services cited here (Soluvox, Communication LGP, Smith.ai) also announce a 24/7 service, staffed by people on duty.
